The Department of Business Recognised Academic Excellence

Last Thursday (21st January) at the IT Tralee, North Campus, President of the Institute Dr. Oliver Murphy paid tribute to Leanne O’Riordan, a native of Rathmore for her recent success in the Leaving Certificate where she obtained 495 points. In recognising her academic achievement the Institute awarded a €2,000 Scholarship to Leanne who is currentlypursuing an honours degree in Business Studies at the Institute. Leanne attended Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra and at the award ceremony she was joined by her parents, her school Deputy Principal and Accounting Teacher Maria Hanrahan and Guidance Counsellor Niamh Dwyer. In accepting the scholarship award, Leanne outlined the reasons why she decided to choose IT Tralee. “I decided to put IT Tralee as my number one choice on the CAO for a number of reasons. The size of the college was an important consideration. Students can become anonymous in larger colleges and I felt that the size and scale of IT Tralee would offer a more personalised education experience. This has certainly been the case and there is an excellent relationship between the lecturing staff and the students. The second factor I considered was access to the college. Daily I travel to the ITT by bus or train, but there were also lots of options for high quality, reasonably priced accommodation if I decided to live in Tralee. And of course, an important consideration was the course on offer. My degree programme offers me the opportunity to study lots of different subjects, with the option to specialise in accounting, agribusiness or marketing in Year 3. Also I have a guaranteed work-placement which will enable me to put into practice the theory I learn as part of my programme”. The IT Tralee intends to extend this scholarship programme to all departments in the Institute for the next academic year, where the first year student in each department with the highest number of Leaving Certificate points will be awarded a financial scholarship to support their studies at the ITT.
