Spectacular Display of Student Talents to celebrate Proclamation Day 2016 in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra

With the whole student body a wonderful celebration and commemoration of 1916 took place in the school gym this morning. With event organiser Karen Sullivan leading proceedings just after 9am there was a presentation to students and staff with the following students taking part:

Jerry Cronin read a piece from Pearse’s oration at O’Donovan Rossa’s Funeral; Fiona Cremins  followed with a description of Cumann na mban’s  part in the rising and biography of each of the 7 signatories of the Proclamation .

Thomas Fleming  gave us an account of the Rising in Kerry. Fergal O’Connor described the events leading to the death of his grand uncle and local Rathmore man Captain Patrick O’Connor.

Captain O’Connor’s grand niece & nephew Sarah & Fergal O’Connor were interviewed by Kerry Radio shortly after 10am

Easter Rising 1916 by WB Yeats was read by Aisling O’Brien.

At this point proceeding were taken outside where the senior students formed a guard of honour for local Hunt members, led by Seamus O’Connell arrived on horseback with the Tricolour from Thomas Meagher Foundation. John Christy Nagle, John O’Connor, John Daly, Joe McAuliffe, Joan Brosnan and Pat Sheehan were part of the hunt with Joan Brosnan and John O’Connor presented the flag to Mr Kerins school principal.

Past pupil Con O’Riordan and Breeda Fleming, also a parent of a student at the school hoisted the flag to Paul Sheerin’s The Last Post on Trumpet. Followed by Amhran na bhfiann.

Following this all assembled returned to the gym for the final part of today’s celebrations which included Caoimhe O’Brien reading the student body’s 2016 Proclamation followed by Chloe O’Connor narrating the 1916 Proclamation.

All students assembled received a copy of the the 1916 Proclamation as a momento of the day, with Ms Sullivan reminding them that they will remember this day in 50 years time with great affection.

All then rose to hear the Amhrain na bhfiann played on bagpipes by Michael Doyle & Seamus Fleming. The occasion was greatly enhanced by the music and singing of students from across each year group under the direction of Ms Dennehy.

Much thanks to Ciaran Paterson who was busy with sound and amplification for the event, to Jerh O’Donoghue on   video, and  to Nick Kavanagh  Photographer.

The event was a tremendous success and much appreciation to all staff involved in the preparation that went into the event.
